More than five million adults still rely on cash in the UK and it’s used in six billion transactions every year, but there are strong vested interests pushing for it to be permanently replaced by debit and credit cards and other electronic payments. These cost you more in the long-run and enable 3rd parties to track you and your spending.

Anyone who has tried to pay for parking knows what a blood faff it can become if coins are no longer accepted even when it works! COVID was a Godsend to the pro cashless society advocates and no mistake.

Not a topic I imagined seeing in here, but this is a difficult one.
On one hand, I’m savvy enough to see a shit load of ways cashless will be used to control and coerce people into certain behaviors, as well as the opportunity to screw over the normal working classes with insane taxes.
However I also know how much moving away from an archaic “do you want these tokens in my hand?” Model we have now, especially as we use a fiat system, which means we spend made up to money to make physical items to denote made up money.
I think there are bigger issues than just what format you use to count purchasing power. Because that’s all money is really, it’s just a value that dictate what resources and items you’re allowed access to.
I do however think it’s scummy that Rishi is trying to centralize the countries currency to a digital currency controlled by the Bank of England, which it can simply empty the accounts in the event of a death, or otherwise unwelcome behavior. And you can bet MP’s will have a clause stating membership to parliament means your accounts cannot be frozen as a means of ensuring democracy or some bullshit.
